Defence & Space Industry Jobs

Find your Place in South Australia’s Defence or Space Industry

South Australians looking for exciting lifelong career opportunities need to look no further than the defence and space industries.

With a range of high paying careers across naval shipbuilding, information warfare, cyber and space, the state will be looking to employ more than 10,000 people over the next two decades.

Hot on the heels of the recent AUKUS announcement that a new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines will be built in South Australia, it has never been a better time to start your career in the industry.

The nuclear-powered submarines will see up to 5,500 workers at the peak of the build in 20 to 30 years, and there will be up to 4,000 workers who will be starting within the next year on the infrastructure needed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard for when the build commences.

The defence industry offers a broad range of jobs including engineers, scientists, technicians, project managers, ICT, administrators and tradespeople.

South Australia is also home to the biggest surface shipbuilding project in the nation’s defence history: the Hunter Class Frigate Program. Through the Hunter program, BAE Systems Australia will build a fleet of nine formidable anti-submarine warfare frigates for

the Royal Australian Navy. With work already underway at Osborne, the workforce at the shipyard and the program’s UK and Melbourne sites has already grown to more than 1,400.

Home to more than 100 space-related organisations, the Australian Space Agency, Mission Control Centre and the future Australian

Space Park, South Australia also has a rapidly growing space industry.

There are more than 1,400 people currently working across different roles in the industry, from space scientists, propulsion and robotic engineers to data and Artificial Intelligence analysts, software developers and space lawyers.

Whether you are in school, close to finishing school or looking for a career change, there are a range of pathways to kick-start your career in South Australia’s defence and space industries and you don’t need to study at university to get involved.

Visit the defence and space industries zone and speak with key employers and join in on presentations to discover where a career in space or defence could lead you.
